Welcome to our page.
We are Republicans who are going to vote No on Issue 2.
As Republicans, we have always taken pride in the fact that our party turns out for elections. We vote in primaries and general elections and we are going to vote No on Issue 2 on November 8 to stop Senate Bill 5.
A no vote is needed on Issue 2 because Senate Bill 5 takes away the rights and voices of our firefighters, police officers, nurses, teachers and others. These are the people we trust to patrol our streets, or respond to emergencies like house fires or a loved one suffering a heart attack. These are the workers we turn to when our elderly parents need care or our children need a good education so they can grow up and pursue their dreams. We need to have the backs of those who protect ours and our loved ones.
We are not passive participants in Democracy. This year we need to make sure we get out and vote because we are under attack by extreme politicians who have supported Senate Bill 5, the unfair, unsafe law that hurts all of us.
SAFETY
Firefighters work in teams. They should be permitted to negotiate for the right team to get the job done, save lives and protect themselves. Police officers should be allowed to ask for an additional officer when they are on patrol in tough parts of town late at night, but Senate Bill 5 makes it illegal for police officers to talk about safe staffing levels.
And Senate Bill 5 makes it harder for police officers and firefighters to bargain for safety equipment like bullet proof vests and semi-automatic weapons. As Republican state Sen. Bill Seitz, R-Cincinnati, said before voting against SB 5, this is a head's management win, tails workers lose bill.
We support Republicans like Sen. Seitz who understands this bill has unintended consequences and goes too far.
RIGHTS
Vote No on Issue 2 because Senate Bill 5 takes away our rights. We're a country that believes in rights. The Bill of Rights were added to the U.S. Constitution to ensure we have inalienable rights. Senate Bill 5 tells police officers and firefighters, the people we trust because they have our backs, that they have no legal right to speak up about safe staffing levels.
PERSONAL
Yes, it is personal. We have family members, friends, neighbors and others who are under attack and we're going to back the people who have our back like firefighters, police officers, teachers and nurses.
We've seen the polling. Republicans do not support this bill. The only bipartisan vote in the legislature was in opposition to Senate Bill 5. Six Republicans in the Ohio Senate voted against the legislation because it goes too far and has unintended consequences.
LOCAL CONTROL
As Republicans, we believe in local control. We know what is best for our communities. Politicians in Columbus are telling local communities how to deal with local budget issues. First politicians in Columbus cut more than a $1 billion in state funding to local communities in order to balance the state budget on the backs of middle class families. Public employees are problem solvers. They have shared in the sacrifices to balance local budgets and ensure vital services are delivered by voluntarily giving back hundreds of millions of dollars in wage decreases, furlough days and increased healthcare costs.
FAITH
We are going to vote No on Issue 2 to stop SB 5 because Isaiah 1:16b-18a says "Cease to do Evil, Learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow. Come now, let us argue it out, says the Lord."
VETERANS
One unintended consequence is taking away the rights of teachers who are veterans to receive credit for their time served in the military. Ohio's current law allows for veterans to count their time served in the military towards their teaching service. This practice has encouraged those who have served their country to enter the classroom. Under SB 5, that time won't be counted. We oppose Senate Bill 5 because it effectively punishes our bravest men and women for their military service and keeps them out of the classroom.
